Luxury Cotton Sheets Archives

Bamboo Sheets Secret Properties

bamboo sheet setBamboo sheets are yet another natural product such as linen or cotton, woven from plant fibres. However there are some very good reasons for choosing to buy bamboo sheets, they have outstanding properties that truly outweigh the competition, in regard to health, comfort and durability.

Here are the Bamboo Sheet Secrets That Cotton Manufacturers Aren't Telling You

Bamboo sheets are not your normal 800 thread count bed sheets. Bamboo sheets are not only comfortable but they're designed to be the most luxurious sheets for your bed as well as your guest bedroom. Bamboo sheets have a large amount of natural antibacterial resistance. In addition to the antibacterial qualities, they are also very antifungal. This antifungal property is a natural way for the bamboo forest to protect itself from bugs and other vermin that would consume the plants before they reached maturity.

In recent testing by the China Industrial Testing Center, it was discovered that bamboo sheets kill 98.8% of bacteria after 24 hours. These strange-but-true sheets are not only antibacterial and antifungal, they're also renewable. Since they're made from a 100% renewable resource, bamboo, you're using an eco-friendly alternative to traditional cotton, nylon and rayon sheets. In addition the antifungal and antibacterial qualities and since bamboo is a natural repellent of pests and bugs, no pesticides are needed in the growth or cultivation of bamboo plants. This keeps them as natural and safe as possible.

People who sleep on bamboo sheets compare them to silk, but always not that the bamboo sheets are not as slippery as the silk sheets, but just as soft. Bamboo is a unique insulator as well. In the winter, they will insulate and keep you warm, and in the summer time they draw heat away from your body and keep you cool. Bamboo bed sheets are available in a wide variety of colors and thicknesses. You will definitely be able to find any combination of color, bed size and thickness. If you're like me, you like a light color bed sheet that is very thin. Bamboo is as thin as silk without the slipperiness of those silk bed sheets.

After reading the benefits of bamboo bedsheets, most people ask one question, "How much do they cost?", and they expect bamboo sheets to be 4 to 5 times more expensive that regular cotton sheets. After looking at the actual price of bamboo and cotton, you'll find they're very close to the same. I did a price search for 600 thread count Queen cotton sheets and 600 thread count Queen bamboo sheets. The cotton ranged from $39-99 for a queen set of sheets including two pillow cases. The bamboo sheets ranged from $79-109 for the exact same setup including two pillow cases. If you generally buy the cheapest bedding you can find, the cotton is still going to be cheaper. If, however, you generally buy in the middle of the road, or towards the top end of sheets, bamboo will be almost the same in price when compared to cotton.

A single problem I've found is that bamboo sheets are hard to find in stores. I've looked at large retailers like Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Target, and Costco. None of them had any bamboo bed sheets in stock, but you can always find them online. After looking at enough reviews at different retailers, I knew that bamboo sheets were for me. Without discussing it with my wife, I ordered a set for us. When they came in, I put them on the bed and didn't tell her. That night she laid down in the bed and said, "Something is wrong with our sheets!" I said, "What's wrong?" My wife said, "These aren't the same sheets I slept on last night, they're softer and more comfortable!" If that's not enough proof, give it your own test and see if your significant other can tell the difference!

Bed sheets don't just have to be something you sleep on, but they can be something you look forward to sleeping on! Cotton is dry, rough and harbors microbes and bacteria. Bamboo sheets are soft, smooth and kill bacteria in your bed! Find out more about bamboo bed sheets at our website at http://www.BuyBambooSheets.com

Get flannel bedding to keep you warm and cozy this winter. Find plain or patterned, crib to king size, there is a flannel sheet set to suit you and your family’s needs.

Flannel sheets are noted for their fuzzy softness, warmth, and durability. The fabric can be dyed or printed. It was first popular in Wales in the 17th century. Originally flannel was an all-wool fabric made of woollen or worsted yarns.  The surface was brushed into a soft napped finish which obscured the weave method, which may be plain or twill.

Currently, most flannel fabrics are made of cotton or synthetic rayon fibres that are slightly napped on both sides to resemble the old woollen or worsted yarn weaves. This is more economical and hardwearing than wool; also, great for allergy sufferers.

The flannel weights and textures are available in a wide range, which with the quality of the napping affect the warmth and softness of the  fabric.

Flannel bedding is most commonly used during the cold, winter months, but some flannel weights are appropriate all year long, especially if you have air conditioning.

Supima Cotton:
Exceptionally soft and and  of eduring,  long lasting quality, Supima fabrics are woven from super long, extra strong cotton fibers grown in particular areas of the southwestern U.S. and a few other countries worldwide.

“Supima" is a brand name derived from  "superior Pima." Pima is the name given for extra-long-staple (ELS) cotton.  It is considered to be ELS or Pima if its staple length, or fiber, is at least 1-3/8 inches.  This length and fine diameter  class Pima as a premium cotton. It is used to spin the finer count yarns (higher thread count) which are knitted or woven  into soft, luxurious fabrics.

The "Supima" brand name is owned by the non-profit organization of American Pima cotton growers from Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas . The name Supima is used to promote products made of 100-percent cotton grown in these regions.
Licenses can be earned from the Supima organization so that textile manufacturers can use the Supima name on their products. This trademark is the only guarantee of 100% Pima cotton content.

Eough about books...not between the sheets

Upon arriving up here in Montreal during a dark, bitter, damp, rather bleak November, a decade ago, I made a trip to Matelas Bonhair and treated myself to two sets of flannel sheets. One in cornflower blue, the second in mint green.

Family, Fall and Flannel Sheets

Anticipation..... to make my bed with flannel sheets. Yes, flannel sheets! I feel like the luckiest woman on earth to get to sleep between flannel sheets for 8 months out of the year. There is nothing that feels quite as good as flannel.

Dads Useful Ideas for Flannel Bed Sheets

While flannel sheets are excellent for a cold winter's night some folks in fact use them throughout the year. Those folks that have aircon often appreciate having flannel bed sheets when they get cold in the middle of the night.

Are Flannel Sheets Worth the Money?

Long, cold nights are a great time for a cozy bed. When you feel the instinct to hibernate this winter, flannel sheets make the perfect nest for your hideaway.

Picking the Winter Bedding Right for you

Medium-warm bedding like cotton and flannel are also low cost alternatives to wool and down bedding. Flannel is a warmer bedding choice compared to cotton. The flannel fabric is also considered a softer sheet because of the unique weave.

Choose Down Queen Comforters.                                          There are a selection of pieces that may be included in a queen comforter set. Sometimes you will only get the comforter itself while other sets will comprise nearly anything a bed could need. It is smart to think about which ... Better sleeping habits can help:
Your bed should be large and comfortable: If you are disturbed by a restless bedmate, switch to a queen- or king-size bed. Test different types of mattresses, pillows, or cotton sheets you feel comfortable with.

Your bedroom should be a place to sleep: It is not good to use your bed for paying bills, doing work, etc. Help your body recognize the place for rest or intimacy.

Bedroom should be peaceful: Make sure your room is well ventilated and the temperature consistent. You need to keep it quiet.

Hide your clock. You should place your clock so you cannot see the time when you are in bed. This is because it will distract you from the state where your brain instructs you to sleep.

Frette History
The name Frette is synonymous with luxury because of the company's long-standing passion for quality. Edmond Frette established the fine linen company in Grenoble, France in 1860. Along with his partners, Frette created a firm focused solely on fabric, allowing them to become the worldwide leader in the specialty. Soon two factories were established in Sovico and Concorezzo, Italy, where the company is still based today. Frette opened retail stores in Milan, and its first boutique opened on Bond Street in London in 1877, offering linens of the highest quality. Since then Frette linen has expanded worldwide, from Hong Kong to Beverly Hills. Over the years the company reorganized numerous times to accommodate expansion and growth for a product that was becoming highly desired. In 1978 Frette sheets became available in the United States.

Frette Quality Tradition
Frette led the industry by introducing new ways of producing fine linens. In 1880, Frette began to use Vicenzi looms allowing the company to produce intricate damasks unlike any others. These new methods of production enabled the unique company to stand apart and start fulfilling special requests, such as providing linens for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the Kingdom of Italy. Embassies all over the world soon followed suit, and many noble European families began seeking Frette linen. Today, Frette bedding and table linens can be found in the homes of the elite and in many boutiques and hotels, such as the Ritz in Paris and the Plaza in New York. Frette outfitted the Titanic, St. Peter's Basilica, the Orient Express, and the Queen Mary II. Frette introduced a home-wear collection in 1889, focusing on comfortable clothing for people relaxing at home. Almost a century later, the Frette-To-Wear collection provides elegant lounging attire.

Frette Hotel Bedding Collection
Frette led the fine linen industry again by introducing luxurious sheets to many of the world's elite hotels. Frette hotel bedding has become the style of choice for many people who first experienced premium Frette sheets during a stay at a five-star hotel such as Claridge's in London. The 100% Egyptian cotton, 200 thread count Frette Hotel Collection proves that true quality is found in bedding that starts with the best fiber and ends with the best finishing. The fiber, 100% Egyptian long-staple cotton, is superior to other grades of cotton by virtue of its strength, length, and softness. The finishing is performed by the delicate hands of Italian craftsmen whose expertise has been practiced through centuries of tradition. The result is unmatched luxurious bed linens.

Frette sheets in the hotel collection display an embroidered double-piping for classic bed linens with modern appeal. Enjoy the quality chosen by the world's finest hotels for the comfort you deserve every night at home.

Shopping for Sheets

sheets duvet coversShopping For the Right Bed Sheets

Practical and pretty sheets on your bed can refresh a room with comfort and beauty.

High-quality bed sheets can last up to 15 years. When you buy bed sheets, whether you need king size sheets, queen size sheets, or twin sheets, you need to look at thread count and fabric as they determine the quality of a sheet.

They were traditionally white, but now often various colours and patterns are used. They are larger than the bed, so they can be tucked under the mattress in order to be kept in place. The quality of bed sheets is often conveyed by the thread count - the number of threads per square inch of material. Sheets with high thread counts in the 300-and-above range have a durable, lustrous, and soft fabric that gets softer over time and are considered luxury quality. Sheets with lower thread count sheets in the 80- to 120-thread count range have a rougher feel.

Thread count also determines whether a sheet is muslin or percale. Sheets with a thread count of 140 to 180 are muslin; everything higher is percale. In many areas of the world a second flat bed sheet is laid on top of the sheet covering the mattress. This is known as a "top sheet."

Also style is equally important as material quality in selecting the proper sheets for your bedding needs. Crisp, white sheets never go out of style and are always a good selection whether as part of a set or purchased singly to mix and match. Sheets in colours, prints, plaids, and patterns are easy to find in all sizes and price ranges. Each fabric commonly used to make sheets has its own merits.

For comfort and durability, you should choose cotton. One-hundred-percent cotton is a natural and breathable fabric. The most commonly used for cotton sheets are flannel, muslin, oxford, percale, and sateen weaves.

Flannel sheets are warm and may be blended with either a synthetic fabric or cotton. They are typically used in cold climates or in winter because the napped finish provides warmth.

Muslin sheets, commonly used in children's character-themed bedding, have a rough and tough feel and are at the low end of the cotton spectrum.
Oxford is a soft but heavy sheet.

Percale sheets offer a smooth, flat, and closely-woven fabric, finer than muslin. Egyptian cotton sheets are highly durable, lustrous, and silky Egyptian cotton sheets usually have a thread count above 200. The most desired of all bedding fabrics, Egyptian cotton is made of extra-long fiber staples grown along the Nile River. Standard sizes are twin, full, Queen, King, California King.

First off, go ahead and measure your bed to be absolutely sure what you need is what you end up buying. You don't want any surprises here.

Don't go by the typical size label, like queen or king.

Measure the thickness of your mattress, lots of folks forget about this and end up with fitted sheets that pop off because the sheets were made for a thinner mattress.

Some of the newer beds can have pillow top mattresses 18" thick...so if the fit looks close, then opt for the the next size up to account for some possible shrinkage.

A note on fitted sheets.

For the best quality, look for the ones with elastic all the way around. They will stay on the bed without popping off, rather than the ones with elastic only on the sides or on the corners.

Then figure on your pick of fabric.

This is important because your bed sheets, duvet covers and pillow cases will be touching your skin, so it's probably a good idea to go for more natural fibers like linen, cotton, or blends of those.

You'll find that they wick away moisture, dry quickly, and are absorbent. Not to mention that they just feel really soft too! Pure cotton fabric feels cooler to the skin also, which is great for those of us who kick off the covers cause we just get too hot at night.

A lot of people go for polyester blends for their bed linens, because they're more economical and tend to wrinkle a bit less.

They do tend to be warmer for those folks who get too cool at night. But these blends are generally not as comfortable, they hold onto body oils and sometimes odors, and they tend to "pill" also. That means that as they are washed, fibers loosen and eventually fuzz up and form little balls over time.

I remember being able to actually see right through some of my sheets because they had worn out so much right there in the middle, with all of these tiny little balls of what used to be the sheet all over the place. Yes, that was a long time ago- before I knew that nicer sheets and bedding would actually help me feel and sleep better. lol

Some people want to string me up for even mentioning the word polyester in my articles or on my site...but hey...lots of folks still buy and enjoy those poly blends. One lady commented that using polyester sheets was like sleeping inside a plastic garbage bag. I have to take her word on that. lol

These days, most people really are using 100% cotton bed sheets, pillowcases and duvet covers.

For the best durability and softness, a few of the best types of natural fabrics for bed linens are pure Egyptian cotton and Pima or Supima.

What makes this cotton better than all the rest is the fact that their fibers are longer than regular run of the mill cheaper, shorter fiber lower thread count cotton.

Why is this important for bed linens?

Well, if the fibers are longer they makes stronger thread, and then stronger yarns, and ultimately you'll end up with stronger fabric for your bed sheets, pillowcases, duvet covers, comforter shells..etc... These linens even get softer and more comfortable as you wash them over time. You'll be thrilled at how soft and luxurious 100% Egyptian cotton sheets can feel under your skin.

Some folks write and ask me why their sheets pill even though they swear to me that they are really positive that they have 100% pure high thread count bed linens.

Be careful here and make absolutely sure that you're buying 100% Egyptian or Pima, or Supima cotton.
Sometimes you'll end up with misleading labels that actually don't mention that they have blends with other cheaper cotton fibers. This is why it's very important that if you're spending the dollars for that level of quality sheets, you buy through reputable retailers. Remember that skimping on the price is okay as long as you don't expect to have the finest most luxurious, longest lasting bed linens on your bed.

There are a few other things to keep in mind when buying bed linens:

1. Using harsh detergent may hasten the breakdown of your linens. Use a small amount of a gentle liquid detergent to help prevent pilling. If you have hard water, then toss in a little bit of fabric softener right into your washing machine. And hey - put them on the gentle cycle... unless you haven't washed them in over a month they shouldn't really be that dirty, unless you sweat a lot of course. If you've got the washer on the other cycles...then it's just like taking your sheets out and clubbing them with a rock. No wonder they pill. lol

2. Leaving your sheets and other bedding in the dryer on high...or for too long will also really start to bake your sheets. Not good. Try and take sheets out while they're still a tiny tiny bit damp. You'll get less wrinkling that way also....which is a great thing for you and your sheets, pillowcase and duvet covers! Just fold them up nice and they'll dry out naturally. Better yet, try a clothesline when possible.

3..Wash your bedding once per week. So figure on always having 3 decent complete sets of sheets. So, it's one set on the bed, one in the laundry, and one in your linen closet. If having fine bed linens is important to you, then this little routine will help you get the most comfort and use out of them.

Then there's the whole thread count aspect of linens, which just means how many threads run up and down through one square inch of fabric.

Generally speaking, thread counts range from 80 or so, to well up over 1000 these days.

You'd assume that the higher the count the better your bed linens would be. The thing is, that the more threads that you put into that one square inch, the smaller those threads tend to become. Some bed linen manufacturers split the threads and then weave them in a way that allows them to say the thread count is double. Naughty naughty. lol

So there is a point at which a higher thread count doesn't guarantee better softness and durability....which happens somewhere around 400 as I've noticed in reviews by experts in the bed linen industry.

So, a general rule of thumb to go by:

200 to 220 is respectable thread count, and is just fine for daily use.
230 to 290 is better
300 to 400 is best

That being said, there are those folks that really love their 1000 count luxury bed linen and wouldn't have anything else!

I hope this little guide helps you find the most comfy bed linens you've ever had.

toxic bedding, sheetsToxic Chemicals Contribute To Catching Colds And Flu

You probably are aware that giving your immune system a helping hand can ward off colds and the flu. But did you know that common exposures to toxic chemicals in your everyday life can actually increase your chances of becoming sick?

Catching a cold or flu requires exposure to bacteria and viruses and a body with a weak immune system. When bacteria and viruses encounter a strong immune system, the immune system recognizes the bacteria or virus as a foreign invader and fights them off. But when the body's immune system is compromised, it can't do its job of protecting us against the bacteria and viruses that can make us sick.

Unfortunately, today, our immune systems are exposed to a torrent of toxic chemicals that can weaken its ability to defend the health of our bodies. Plastics, pesticides, and pollutants of all kinds are in most consumer products. And virtually all of these chemicals can damage the immune system, leaving your body vulnerable to attack.

There are many toxic exposures in the average American home. So many, in fact, that there is a whole class of chemicals called "immunotoxicants," which, by definition, cause "increased incidence or severity of infectious diseases."

Removing immunotoxicants from your home will do even more than stop colds and flus--it will protect you and your family from all contagious diseases, including bronchitis and pneumonia, diarrhea, measles, mumps, whooping cough, and others. Flu shots and vaccinations? Removing immuntoxics from your home allows your immune system to regenerate naturally, and fight off all infectious diseases.

Here are five simple things you can to start eliminating immunotoxicants from your home and strengthen your immune system.

1. Open the window. During the winter, we keep windows closed to keep warm and save energy, but this also keeps toxic chemicals inside the home. Open a window occasionally to let the toxic fumes out and bring fresh air in.

2. Don't spray disinfectants. It's second nature to reach for a disinfectant to kill cold germs and flu viruses, but disinfectants only make things worse. Disinfectants contain the immunotoxicants cresol, phenol, ethanol, and formaldehyde, which reduce the ability of the immune system to fight the germs they are killing. Better to strengthen the immune system to protect the body from germs as it should. If you need to kill germs, use hot water or tea tree oil.

3. Don't use "permanent" markers. These contain the solvents cresol, toluene and xylene, all powerful immunotoxicants. Choose waterbased markers instead.

4. Don't use nonstick cookware. A 2008 study by the Environmental Working Group through West Virginia University found higher levels of a chemical in Teflon found in the blood of test subjects correlated with lower levels of a protein that helps the body fight bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens. Instead use cast iron, porcelain enamel, glass, clay, or one of the new PFOA-free "green pans."

5. Sleep on untreated cotton or linen sheets. All polyester/cotton and permanent-press cotton sheets are treated with a formaldehyde finish that cannot be removed and continues to emit formaldehyde for the life of the sheet. Common symptoms from this immunotoxicant include runny nose, itchy eyes, and other cold and flu symptoms.

Every step you can take toward removing toxic chemicals in your home will greatly improve your health.

Quality Beds To Produce A Cosy Bedroom

queen bed sheets, bed furniture

Beds are plainly the first piece of furniture one should have in a bed room. Beds are purchasable in different sizes. There are twin, full, king, and queen sized beds. With the umpteen sizes, one does not have to be bound in determining the exact type of bed for their room. Beds are similarly made either of fine-grade wood or all-metal.

Since it is the feature of the bedroom, beds must be given adequate importance and decoration. You need to dress it up with the best and most groovy fabric, since it is the most prominent thing that you will see when you come in the bedroom.

One of the more frequent items owners put in to emphasize their beds is the bed linens. Bed linens put a perception of elegance and class in any kind of bed. Bed linens can be developed out of cloth, silk, polyester, and cloth which is considered the most expensive. Linen sheets are good for hot climates because they tend to cool, and they can also last for a long time. On the other hand cotton sheets are good for any type of season, and they are considered a toughened fabric. These sheets should be washed through machines on a warm setting, bleached only using non chlorinated bleach as specified by washing instructions. Vintage linens then must be hand washed in warm water using mild soap.

You should also consider the placement of the bed in your room. Situate the bed against the middle part of the wall, or opposite the entrance to the room. This makes the headboard the focal point of the room once one enters the room. If you cannot place the bed against the middle portion of the wall, then place it on the part of the wall which is sufficiently extended and spacious to contain the bed.

There are also limitations in placing the bed. You cannot just place it anywhere you wish. Specifically, you cannot place the bed under a window, especially if the window will be opened frequently. A bed under two windows is more feasible.

To complement the look of the bed, you can put some essential pieces of bedroom furniture such as dressers, cabinets, and night stands. Other bedrooms host chairs, loveseats, and benches where one can place extra linen and clothes, and of course, provide a nice place for guests to sit.

In choosing a bed, avoid shopping online as much as possible. You need to try the bed yourself in order to appreciate how it feels lying on it. One of the best ways to determine the right texture of the bed is to place a hand on your back and try to move it while lying. If the hand can move easily then it means the bed is too hard. If you are having a difficult time moving your hand, the bed is soft. If your hand can move with little resistance then the bed is good enough for your comfort.

In buying a bed, do not hesitate to spend. You need to pay more in order to have a more quality item. People tend to be tightfisted on buying bedroom furniture and accessories, believing that they can settle on less expensive materials. But in reality what they are getting is a poor quality bed. So if you have some space in your budget to afford another thousand of dollars or two, then do so! You will be benefiting from a more durable and stylish bed in the long run.

You also have to take into consideration the space that the bed will take up in the room. Beds should not eat half of the bedroom. The bed's size, for one, should be big enough to take substantial space in the room. It should not be oversized though for the room since it could take space more than the room can offer, leaving you with little space to add other essential furniture like drawers, writing desks, and night stands.

The Difference Between Standard Bed Sizes

hotel collection beddingAre you thinking about purchasing a double, a full, or even a queen size bed for your new home in the near future? Any of these sizes will fit in a normal room, but many couples feel that a full or double bed, which are the same thing, is definitely too narrow for anything more than an occasional night's sleep.

A queen size bed will give every one a little bit more room without taking up too much more floor space in your rooms. Of course, there are the basic differences between a full sized bed and a queen, as well as the king. Double size beds or full size beds are fifteen inches wider than a twin sized bed, but if two people are sharing the bed, then each person will only have twenty-seven inches of personal space, much less than a twin. A queen size bed is six inches wider than a double sized bed, which allows more room for each person, but it is still nine inches less than a twin bed.

Double size beds, which are also known as a full size, were the most common for two to sleep in until the early 1960's. They are only fifteen inches wider than a single size bed, which leaves only twenty-seven inches of sleep space for each of two adults. At seventy-five inches long, a full size bed may be too short for some taller adults. These beds will fit easily into smaller rooms, which might be just right for a single sleeper who is under five feet five inches tall. Sheets for these beds are definitely less expensive than queen size or king size. However, many people find that a double size bed is too narrow for two adults and too short as well.

Queen size beds are twenty-one inches wider and five inches longer than a twin sized bed, plus they are six inches wider and five inches longer than a double size bed. Though this extra width and length can make all the difference in getting a good night's sleep, because each adult still has nine inches less of width than if they each slept in a twin bed. A queen size bed works well for guest rooms and small master bedrooms and is a good choice for couples who like to snuggle.
sheets of egyptian cotton
They give two adults more space than a double. The extra length works well for most adults. Sheets and blankets are easy to find and cost less than king bedding. Since they only have thirty inches of personal space for each person, then a queen sized bed may be too narrow for everyday sleeping for a couple. Some bedding is sold as "Full and Queen" and does not really fit either full or queen perfectly. You will want to check bedding dimensions to be sure that it will fit comfortably. Standard size pillows or queen pillows work well. You might find a slightly larger queen size bed, which is called an Olympic Queen.
