Queen size beds suit most people and their bedrooms, and cotton sheets are so comfortable and durable.  Bed sizes vary considerably from children’s cots through to Super and California King,  extra long twin beds and now there is the Olympic Queen bed size as well, which adds an extra six  inches to the width of the regular queen bed. Take care when you buy your cotton sheets that you have measured your mattress not only by length and width, but also the depth, known as the pocket or your bed sheets may not fit well and be uncomfortable. What is it that gives Egyptian cotton sheets their great reputation?

As a bedding fabric, cotton has long been a favourite as it is soft, absorbent, launders well and can be blended with other fibres for increased durability at a lower cost, and treated to be easy care and wrinkle free. The quality varies on the type of cotton used, and how it is processed. Currently the trend is for the long staple Egyptian cotton, which has an extra long fibre with a finer diameter. This fine diameter fibre is what is referred to when thread count is mentioned. The higher the number of threads per inch is a good indicator of quality, the higher the count the better the quality.e.g. 1500TC The long staple fibres process into remarkably soft, light, luxurious sheets. The initial handling of the sheets can be quite crisp, but each successive laundering will soften the sheets into a welcoming cosiness, without the annoying little nobbly pilling which can develop on poorer quality sheets. With proper laundering, Egyptian cotton sheets will last for decades, making them worthy of the initial cost and thus an economical investment. Although the long staple sheets were hard to find and quite expensive when first introduced, the popularity has changed this and they are now affordable and accessible to everyone.
As the easier to grow short staple cotton is also grown in Egypt, look carefully on the labeling for "Long staple Egyptian cotton" and check for the higher thread  count which puts the sheets into the luxury bracket. Also, the term "Egyptian cotton" has become a generic one for the type of soft finish, be sure to check the labeling. The term "cotton rich" does not mean a pure cotton fabric, and may only be a small percentage in the blend. It is better to look for 100% or if choosing a blend, a clearly stated proportion of the cotton content.
The way the cotton is woven also affects the feel. The most common weaves are twill,  sateen, not to be confused with satin and Percale. Percale is sometimes regarded as a fabric in its own right, but it refers to the weave and has at least 180 thread count. Percale is a popular finish for cotton blends.
Egyptian cotton is the clear leader and King of the cotton world today. The extra softness, ultimate luxury and extended durability is like no other, and will keep it in first position for many years to come for the royalty in your household sleeping on twin, king or queen size beds.
